90 Day Fiancé: Why Fans Still Have Mixed Feelings About Alan & Kirlyam

90 Day Fiancé fans might root for many romances to work out, but many viewers have mixed opinions when it comes to the marriage between Alan and Kirlyam Cox. Brazilian beauty Kirlyam is adored by many longtime viewers, as the kindhearted woman was praised for her sweet nature and winning personality. However, not all 90 Day Fiancé viewers are thrilled about the couple still being together as of 2022.

Alan and Kirlyam were introduced on 90 Day Fiancé season 1 when Kirlyam left Brazil for the first time to join Alan in Los Angeles. The Brazilian beauty was exposed to an entirely different kind of living and dealt with cultural shock and being away from her family. Meanwhile, Alan grappled with his jealousy and attempted to control his younger partner. Alan’s overbearing nature prevented Kirlyam from moving forward with her modeling career. Meanwhile, viewers were uncomfortable to learn that Alan had met Kirlyam when she was a child even though he insisted he didn’t have romantic feelings for her until he met her again when she was an adult.

Fans in a Reddit thread (included below) celebrated 90 Day Fiancé couple Alan and Kirlyam by sharing an image of them captured, “Who remembers Alan & Kirlyam from season 1, 2014? Still married, 2 kids, live in North Carolina. He is a designer and photographer, she is a stay-at-home mom. Another successful story [clapping emoji].” While the user was thrilled to view Alan and Kirlyam as a franchise success story, other commenters had mixed feelings over Kirlyam staying with Alan given his controlling behavior and the fact that he met her when she was a child. “I always found him very weird,” one top commenter wrote. “I thought very controlling too,” a commenter wrote back. “She was way too good for him. This guy literally groomed her - so gross,” another user added.

Though many 90 Day Fiancé fans are rooting for Kirlyam’s happiness and enjoy seeing her at home in the United States, Alan remains a polarizing franchise cast member. “Amazing what a success marriage can be when you start grooming your future wife at the age of 12 and forbid her from ever having a job,” one critical commenter voiced. Many users were concerned that Alan uses his Mormon religion to control Kirlyam and her actions and opportunities. “Successful in going on a ‘mission’ to an impoverished area, spotting a 12 year, telling her father to hold her for him to marry as soon as she's legal, smashing her model dreams as soon as she arrives to the US because he doesn't like how other men look at her, and making sure to impregnate her so she won't leave him,” another commenter wrote about Alan and Kirlyam’s situation.

Overall, it appears that Alan and Kirlyam’s marriage reflects one of the largest concerns in the overall 90 Day Fiancé franchise, as multiple older US cast members have been accused of traveling to impoverished foreign areas to seek younger spouses. This has led to concerns that Americans take advantage of people in less fortunate situations and try to control their spouses. Many fans have celebrated when the younger cast members dumped their controlling partners, such as Rosemarie Vega breaking up with Big Ed Brown or Ximena Morales Cuellar dumping Mike Berk. However, 90 Day Fiancé fans are also rooting for Kirlyam’s happiness.
