Ms. Marvel's MCU Powers May Be Linked To Eternals Technology

The Ms. Marvel trailer and certain comic book connections raise the possibility that Kamala Khan’s MCU powers are derived from the Eternals’ technology. In the comics, Ms. Marvel gained stretching abilities after becoming an Inhuman. However, it’s become apparent that the MCU has different plans for the live-action version of the character.

The first full trailer for Kamala’s upcoming Disney+ show reveals that the character will be less like Mr. Fantastic and more like DC’s Green Lantern. The footage indicates that Kamala will start out as a normal teenager before her life is changed by a mysterious bracelet. Wearing it gives Kamala the ability to produce and control purple energy constructs. Thanks to the bracelet, Kamala appears to be well on her way to becoming a powerful cosmic superhero, not unlike her idol, Captain Marvel. It’s likely that much of the show’s first season will revolve around Kamala learning to harness her new energy powers and use them for good in the MCU.

The powers the bracelet grant Kamala in the show indicate that it’s the MCU’s interpretation of the Quantum Bands, which were highly sought-after cosmic weapons wielded by Quasar in Marvel Comics. So far, they seem to share the same function. If they are indeed the Quantum Bands, there’s a good chance that Marvel will use the Eternals to explain Ms. Marvel’s powers. In the comics, Quasar got the Quantum Bands from Marvel Boy aka The Crusader, a forgotten superhero raised by the Uranian Eternals. The group of Eternals based on Uranus entrusted Marvel Boy with the Quantum Bands in the 1950s. It’s possible that they have a similar backstory in the MCU.

The idea of Ms. Marvel’s bracelet turning out to be Eternals tech is supported by the Marvel movie, where it was confirmed that Ajak’s group isn’t the only branch of Eternals living in the MCU. There’s also the Titanian Eternals, which counted both Thanos and Starfox as members. Since Marvel is adhering to this crucial concept from the comics, it’s entirely plausible that some of the Eternals living out in space created the Quantum Bands thousands of years ago. At some point, they could have made their way to Earth where they fell into the hands of Kamala.

Marvel using the Eternals – as opposed to the Inhumans or the Kree – to make Kamala a superhero would work well for the Disney+ series. Since Eternals is such a recent addition to the MCU, it makes sense for Ms. Marvel to take full advantage of the various contributions it made to Marvel’s world. And with the advanced technology they possessed in the film, it’s not hard to imagine different members of their species building a weapon like the one Kamala has in the show. Plus, it will help Kamala stand apart from the MCU's Captain Marvel if the show chooses not to link her bracelet to the Kree. The blue-skinned aliens were already used for Carol’s MCU origin story, so Marvel can make Kamala unique to her by incorporating an Eternals connection instead.
