Harry Potter: 10 Things To Know About Daniel Radcliffe & Emma Watson's Friendship

Harry and Hermione shared a special friendship in all the Harry Potter movies, and their endearing bond became a mainstay of the series and its success. So, it's only befitting that the actors who played the two iconic characters would be good friends in real life, and fortunately, they are.

Daniel Radcliffe mentioned in Return To Hogwarts that Harry Potter bonded him with his castmates, and he and Watson had a special friendship during and after the filming of the movies. As they have grown and charted their own unique career paths, the two have continued to share a sweet friendship and have each other's backs.

While speaking to Vogue about her experience filming the 20-year reunion with the cast, Watson noted how pleased she was to see how her co-stars had grown, especially Radcliffe, who very maturely acknowledged how the Potter experience was different for Watson since she was a girl and had nobody to share with.

She said, "Similarly for Dan, it really touched me how reflective he had been over the years about how different it had been for me as a girl." There were many great quotes in Return To Hogwarts, and Radcliffe's astute observation about his friend was an underrated one.

In the same interview, Watson also revealed how the trio doesn't really like cellphones or any electronic devices. She said that the other two hated Whatsapp, so she and Radcliffe try to meet individually whenever they can.

"We aren’t on a group chat but we speak individually," she told Vogue magazine. The release of the special made sure that she stayed in touch with Radcliffe through it. There were many heartbreaking separations in Harry Potter, but thankfully there hasn't been one in real life.

While discussing the extent of her communication with Radcliffe, Watson also revealed the nature of their friendship back then and even now. They both prefer staying out of the limelight, so "Dan and I generally try and calm each other’s nerves," she says.

Daniel and Emma have supported each other through media attention and frenzy, and continue to do so to this day. She showed gratitude for her co-star, saying "it’s been nice to have each other’s support, knowing there was going to be another wave of attention coming."

Along with emotional interviews, Return To Hogwarts' most pleasant surprise was the wealth of archival footage of the actors since they were little kids in the first few movies. In one particularly adorable moment, Emma was seen comparing her height with Daniel, claiming that she was taller than him.

He good-naturedly asked her why she was out to embarrass him this way. Similarly, Daniel and Emma were seen indulging in races towards Professor McGonagall along with their co-star Rupert Grint. They clearly had many happy moments growing up on set.

At the height of Potter mania, many rumors swirled about Radcliffe and Watson dating each other, but both of them clarified that that was never the case. According to Watson, the bond she shared with Radcliffe was an "older brother, younger sister thing."

Radcliffe also spoke to Esquire, via The Independent, about the fanship, saying “We know it’d be everything the fans ever wanted. I’m sorry guys, it’s not happening. It’s just not. There’s something really incestuous about the idea of it.” The sibling bond was clearly real.

As good siblings do, Radcliffe and Watson helped each other navigate through the mindboggling world of coming-of-age and teenage dating. They hit puberty on the sets of Harry Potter, so it was obvious that they would also find love there.

In Return To Hogwarts, Daniel revealed that Emma gave him dating tips while they filmed Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire. "The amount of prep and coaching Emma and I would give each other on texting to the opposite sex," he recollected. "Like if she was texting a boy or I was texting a girl, I'd be like, 'She sent me this many kisses back, what do I do? This is a nightmare'."

While on set for the movies, Daniel and Emma bickered a lot. However, their fights weren't about petty misdemeanors — the two discussed intellectual topics on which they usually disagreed, which would lead to a clash between the two.

In an interview with the Radio Times, reported by The Express, Radcliffe revealed, "Oh, God. We used to argue about everything. Religion. Politics." The two would often take opposing sides in the debate which would lead to big disagreements between the pair.

The biggest fight between Watson and Radcliffe took place during the evidently eventful production of the fourth movie. The two ruffled each other's feathers over the Latin language, of all things.

In the same interview with the Radio Times, Radcliffe reminisced, "I remember one of the big arguments we had on the fourth film - we didn't speak to each other for a couple of days - was about... She was arguing about the Latin language, that nobody knows what it sounds like, what a Latin accent should be. And I was like, 'Yeah, but it's still spoken a lot in the Catholic church.'" Both of them were "furious" and "livid" and stayed that way for several days.

Emma Watson likes to stay loyal to her people, and "keep it in the family," at least according to an old MTV interview available on YouTube. With Robert Pattinson soaring to new heights of fame thanks to Twilight, a question about him inevitably made its way to Watson, since the two had worked together on the fourth movie.

She praised Pattinson, but when asked to pick who was "dreamier" between Radcliffe and Pattinson, she was quick to say “Obviously, I’m gonna have to say Daniel, because he’s just gorgeous.” The compliment was sweet, even if a bit uncharacteristic of the actress.

Many fans misconstrued Harry and Hermione being endgame in the movies, and the dance scene between the two in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I was one of the reasons why. The very platonic and adorable number between Radcliffe's Harry and Watson's Hermione also surprised the actors, who first thought it would be awkward.

Radcliffe found it odd to suddenly dance to Nick Cave, but Watson said on the special "Now, it's one of my favorite scenes from the whole of the series," and Radcliffe agreed. She also said that her "level of familiarity" with Radcliffe led to the scene being so beautiful.
