Marvel Will Finally Reveal The Truth Behind Its Most Powerful 'Beyond' Villains

Warning: Contains a preview for Amazing Spider-Man #92.BEY

In a preview for Amazing Spider-Man #92.BEY by Jed MacKay, Cody Ziglar, Zeb Wells, Luigi Zagaria, Bruno Oliveria, Fran Galàn, Mark Bagley, and Wayne Faucher, Monica Rambeau is finally about to confront the mysterious figures running the Beyond Corporation, who might just be the most powerful villains the Marvel Universe ever had to face.

The Beyonders are a race of omnipotent creatures who live "beyond" the known Multiverse, so powerful that they have been considered as a parody of the real-life Marvel editors, who have the power of life and death over the characters depicted in their books. The original Beyonder, who is about to return in the new Defenders series, appeared during the first Secret Wars event and he played with the most powerful heroes and villains of Earth as if they were puppets. Despite that, he was just an "adolescent" member of his race, and the full danger of the Beyonders was revealed only many decades later, during the second Secret Wars, in which they simply decided to erase the whole Multiverse from existence as an experiment. Luckily, Doctor Doom was able to destroy them and save the Multiverse (even if that insufferable Reed Richards will claim all merit for that). However, there is still some trace of the Beyonders left: the Beyond Corporation.

Introduced in the 2006 cult miniseries Nextwave, by Warren Ellie and Stuart Immonen, the Beyond Corporation is halfway between a terrorist group and a modern big tech company. They kidnapped Monica Rambeau and other unlikely heroes and forced them to live manufactured lives in a pocket dimension, playing with them as the Beyonders like to do. Apparently, Monica was able to get rid of them, but they have recently returned in the Spider-Man books. They acquired what was left of the Parker Industries, including the rights for the Spider-Man name and appearance, and have hired Ben Reilly to be their corporate superhero. Monica is working covertly with Misty Knight and Colleen Wing, who have been hired by Beyond to train Ben, to take down the corporation. In a preview for Amazing Spider-Man shared by Marvel, the hero formerly known as Captain Marvel is finally openly confronting the Beyond Corporation.

It is hard to predict if Monica will actually have to fight the Beyonders themselves. In Captain America and the Mighty Avengers, it was strongly implied that the creatures behind the Beyond Corporation were a different group of Beyonders, so they might have survived Doom's punishment in Secret Wars. Certainly, Monica bears a grudge against them for being tortured, played with, and having her memories altered. Considering Monica Rambeau is one of the most powerful heroes around, and that she is one of the few people to know this enemy well, she might be the only chance to stop the Beyond Corporation's nefarious plans. For the moment, she is just taking out the host of monstrous creatures that Beyond manufactured through their "super-villain program", but such an open act of hostility will probably draw out Beyond's higher management.

It will also be interesting to see how this storyline will connect to the upcoming Defenders book, which is written by Al Ewing, who also wrote Captain America and the Mighty Avengers and is a great fan of Nextwave. Readers can witness the opening shots of Monica Rambeau's war with the Beyond Corporation when Amazing Spider-Man #92.BEY hits the shelves on March 16.
