Nintendo Delays Advance Wars 1+2 Release Due To War In Ukraine

It has been announced that Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp has been delayed by Nintendo due to the war in Ukraine. The game was previously slated to be released for Nintendo Switch on April 8th, as of last month's Nintendo Direct.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp, a remake of the Advance Wars series' two Game Boy Advance titles, was first announced at E3 in 2021. This is not the game's first delay; it was originally intended for a release in December of that year. Following that announcement, Advance Wars 1+2 was delayed to spring 2022 for unknown reasons, before the April 8th release date was finally announced last month. As a result of this, the franchise's small-but-dedicated fanbase, as well as new players interested in giving the franchise a try, have been waiting a long time to try the remade Advance Wars title.

Now, however, it seems these fans will have to wait longer still. Nintendo has announced via Twitter that "In light of recent world events, we have made the decision to delay Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp." A new release date was not provided, with the company instead simply asking players to await further updates. Although not stated directly, it is clear that this decision was made in response to the war in Ukraine. In fact, this is only the latest in a long list of actions taken by the video game industry in response to the war, and it's not the first video game to be delayed due to the conflict either; Ukrainian developer GSC has delayed S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 until the war is resolved.

Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising, the two original games from Re-Boot Camp, have previously been available for purchase on the Wii U Virtual console. As such, some players will still be able to enjoy these past outings of the franchise in lieu of the new release. However, this doesn't mean that Re-Boot Camp will have nothing new to offer these players. The latest incarnation of the Advance Wars series will include a custom map generator and an all-new multiplayer mode as part of the updates for the Nintendo Switch.

While this news may be disappointing to many who were anticipating the release of Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp, Nintendo's choice is an understandable one. A military-themed release at this time could be viewed as inappropriate, a view which Nintendo itself seems to share. Fans who feel let down should keep this in mind, and remember that Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp will be releasing eventually.
