WARNING: Contains SPOILERS for Unwelcome (2023).While Unwelcome eventually turns into a folk horror with comedy elements, for much of its runtime, the horror movie brings back one regrettable, short-lived sub-genre that ruled ‘00s British horror. The horror genre has been through some great trends and is home to some regrettable fads. However, usually, even the most widely-disliked horror trends provide interesting fare for critics and academics to analyze. For example, the “torture porn” trend that caused so much hand-wringing from moral guardians in the mid-‘00s has since been viewed as a compelling and complicated reaction to the violence of the war on Terror and the normalization of state-sanctioned torture post-9/11.
Bob Clark's 1974 horror film Black Christmas is one of the most influential slasher movies of all time, and it has an unforgettably chilling ending. In Black Christmas Billy is considered the villain as he picks off victims one by one, and after almost 50 years, his identity is still debated. The story takes place in a sorority house, where the residents are throwing a Christmas party before they depart. Little do they know, however, that a perverted killer has made his way into the house, and is preparing to pick them off one by one. The Billy Black Christmas character remains in the shadows for most of the movie, that is, until the chilling ending.
