Nicole met Mahmoud while she was on a spiritual trip in Egypt, and the two got married shortly afterward. While Nicole loves Mahmoud, she struggles with adjusting to the more conservative culture in Egypt, particularly with dressing more modestly, as women are expected to do there. Nicole decided to return to Egypt indefinitely to be with Mahmoud, however, she is still not happy about living there.
